Beethoven Quartet Cycle Poster
Beethoven Quartet Cycle The Juilliard String Quartet performed the complete quartets of Beethoven in a series of six concerts, in six cites, during the 1989-90 season. Scott was asked by one of the tour venues — Wharton Center in East Lansing, Michigan — to create a poster for the series; we imprinted posters for the other cities and shipped them across the continent. 29”x 18”
In the same way that plays of Shakespeare are known as “The Cannon,” the complete string quartets of Beethoven are known as “The Cycle.” The idea of the composer on a bicycle seemed like one of those initial silly concepts best moved on from — until Scott realized that the earliest wooden bicycles in Vienna were exactly contemporary with Beethoven. He would certainly have been aware of them, and it’s fun to think of him trying one out (when nobody was watching). A mode of transportation is a nice image for a “tour” poster.
